Know Your Rights to Spot ScammersYour home is one of the most valuable assets you own.  Know your rights and learn how to spot the red flags to protect it from predators:

  • Unsolicited offers to buy your home or pay off your mortgage
Scammers like to operate in secret.  Before making a major decision to sell your home, talk to family and friends.
If you want to sell your home, contact an independent, licensed real estate agent to protect your interests.
  •  Unwelcome visits, calls, or letters
You should document all conversations with suspicious people. You have a right to photograph or videotape your conversations with other people.
  •  Threats to call code enforcement
HUD-Approved Housing Counselors are always free and can help you connect to trusted home repair programs. Contact HUD at 800-569-4287.

  •  Pretending to work for the city
You have a right to ask for ID.
